Progress
On November 26th, 2024, the Southampton Town Board passed a Resolution authorizing a Letter of Intent to become a New York State Pro Housing Community.
The Pro-Housing Community Program is designed to reward local governments that are working hard to address the housing crisis in their community. By passing the Resolution, the Town recognized the urgent need to address the housing affordability challenges within the Town of Southampton, and expressed eagerness to implement policies that promote affordable, diverse and accessible housing options, while ensuring that those efforts contribute to the overall economic vitality and quality of life within the Town. Becoming a Pro-Housing Community will provide access to critical resources, including significant financial incentives that could potentially support the revitalization of the Hampton Bays downtown.

On October 8, 2024, the Southampton Town Board unanimously passed Resolution 2024-1180, adopting the Pattern Book for Hampton Bays Hamlet Center as a component of the Town Comprehensive Plan
The action was taken ‘to ensure any future development is visually and architecturally compatible and consistent with the goals and objectives of smart growth while safeguarding community character and maintaining/enhancing public access to Good Ground Park’” and to ‘help guide the (Southampton Town) Planning Board’s review for redevelopment in the Hamlet Center and surrounding business corridor as appropriate.’ Following the adoption of the Pattern Book, Alfred Caiola commented, ‘The passage of this document is a thoughtful and strategic response to the challenge of managing change while protecting our shared quality of life.’ In order to fully achieve the vision, the Town Board will next need to adopt revisions to the Town’s Zoning Code in order to allow for vibrant, mixed-use revitalization.
